What is Primal?

Primal is simply living the way we were meant to. By that I mean the way our bodies evolved to thrive in our natural environment over millions of years. In Mark Sisson’s book The Primal Blueprint, he identifies “a set of simple instructions (the Blueprint part) that allows you to influence how your genes express themselves in order to build the strongest, leanest, healthiest body possible, taking clues from evolutionary biology (that’s the Primal part)”.

You can thrive in our modern world by following the basic principles found in our evolutionary past. You provide your body with the dietary and physical activity inputs that it has evolved to expect, and you open the door to optimum gene expression and optimum health. At the same time you are experiencing positive expression of genes for health, happiness, and vitality, you can also be downregulating or suppressing the expression of genes that can cause negative outcomes. These benefits can be achieved by anyone at any age, it just comes down to the environment you provide for yourself (what you eat, how you move, how you sleep, how you handle stress, etc.).

In a nutshell, evolution tells us to eat real food, to not be sedentary, to get plenty of sleep, to have some fun and to get some sun! This leaves plenty of room to accommodate regional, seasonal, and individual circumstances. It’s so easy a caveman can do it!
