Many of us don’t make our health a high priority, but we should. It’s not selfish to put your well-being ahead of other priorities, it may be the best thing you can do to advance your other priorities. Without your health you can’t function at your best level, and at worst you can become a burden; nobody is responsible for your health and well-being but you!
We all have priorities in our personal, social, and work lives. Often these priorities are driven by the wants and needs of others around you. It’s a good thing to serve the people you care about, but it is also important to serve yourself. Think about it, if your health was really important to you (it should be!) it would be a priority. You unknowingly put other people’s less important priorities ahead of your own; you choose how to spend your time, choose wisely!
There are many things you can do to prioritize your health without ignoring your other responsibilities. Small steps don’t take much time, but can really make a difference in your health, productivity, and energy. Think of the time you may be spending doing things that really have no value, you’ll probably realize that you have more free time than you think!
Here are a some things you can do that are easy, free, and don’t require much of a time commitment:
- Nutrition: Eat nutritious whole food, avoid ultra-processed food.
- Exercise: Lift some heavy things a couple of times a week, your body weight will do it.
- Movement: Incorporate more movement in your daily activities (walking, stairs, etc.).
- Sleep: Get adequate sleep every night, there is no such thing as “catching up” on sleep.
This is scratching the surface, but small changes create habits and build momentum to make more changes down the road.
Remember, good health helps you sustain a good life!
